Sitting in Changi airport, Singapore while I wait to board my next flight to Phnom Penh, I count myself lucky I have gotten a boss seat beside a charging point. No matter where I am in the world I can always stay connected, so I got thinking about the tech travel pals any respecting digital nomad needs. From keeping you hooked up visually, audibly, online and to the world around you, here is a round up of everything you need to be tech travel savvy.
Essentially a portable battery, power banks are creations from a Gen Y god who understands that having access to a fully charged phone at all times is the gospel according to Steve Jobs. A power bank is particularly useful in crisis travel situations; you know the one where you go to the toilet and arrange to meet your friend in the spot you left her in. Three hours have passed, you have no idea where you are, and your phone is crying out for proper charging. Enter the Powerbank!
Adapters – Universal
Goes without saying that an adapter for overseas travel is a packing essential. Don’t end up like I always do; in the airport scanning tonnes of different adapter options while kicking myself for not just investing in a universal one in the first place.
Travelling with a significant other? Do you and bae like to cuddle up and watch movies together at home? What happens when you are on your budget Jetstar flight, and you are bummed out because you have got to share a pair of earphones? It is a tech travel nightmare right! Earphone splitters give you the capability to connect two sets of earphones into one audio jack. Say goodbye to dislodged earphone irritability when your partner moves in the opposite direction.
DJI Osmo Pocket
This cool tool is a pocket camcorder with a stabilised handheld camera; the DJI Osmo Pocket is basically the toy every vlogger wants for Christmas. Awesome for trips to far-flung locations, tech travel fanatics will love the power and capability of this little device. Enabling the user to capture professional looking videos, the latest from DJI is sure to be a hit with the Instagram influencing crowd.
Headphones – noise cancelling
Noise cancelling headphones are a must for tech travellers for two reasons; they offer fantastic sound quality, so you almost feel like you are right there in the recording studio with your favourite musician. They also cancel background noise, so can offer some reprieve on busy flights or in rowdy hostels. Sennheiser has a fantastic range of quality headphones including the PXC 550 Wireless model. Pricey but oh so worth it.
Any tablet will do, but in my opinion, Apple is the best, so it is iPad all the way. The mini versions are super sleek and tuck nicely into a backpack. While I like the mini, I opted for the 9.7” as it makes movie watching much more enjoyable. Add a wireless Bluetooth keyboard into the mix, and you got yourself a laptop! The versatility of tablets is what makes them so appealing to tech travel nerds, so don’t get left in the dust.
Download the Kindle app, and some podcasts and your iPad will become your number one travel buddy!
