One of the tips you were probably given before you started out making your blog was to use search engines to your advantage. In fact, blog experts and web developers have come up with a term “Search Engine Optimization” or SEO for short.
SEO is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or unpaid search results.
Understanding how search engines work, blog and site owners are able to drive traffic to their site. What are some of the best strategies out there when it comes to using the SEO strategy?
Use the Right Tools to Measure Your Blog Stats
Many bloggers think that the tool that wins it for their website when it comes to the SEO strategy is Google’s Keyword tool. Make no mistake, this is one of the good tools to start out with, but it’s weaknesses appear when it becomes apparent that the tool was really created for products and designed to measure only what people were willing to pay for.
Since it was also specifically created to work with Google AdWords, it presented data that was not relevant as previously believed.
So what tool should you use? Go for Google Analytics. It can provide you with a ton of information about your readers, Internet traffic and their clicking patterns. Just be sure you are running the latest updated version or the Universal Analytics version.
If you find Google Analytics too intimidating, Google Webmaster Tools should also give you a lot of useful information. Just click on your blog under “Webmaster Tools,” go to “Search Traffic”, then select “Search Queries”. You can view the data here or import it to MS Excel for better organization.
Write Content that is Really Unique
Search engines are “attracted” to unique content on the web, so the best thing to do here is generate your own unique data that can be found nowhere else. How do you do this?
Research with Tools – By tools we mean Google Analytics and Google Consumer surveys. There, you are certain to find data that is worth interpreting or writing about.
Conduct Interviews – This is the oldest trick in the book, you are sure to have data that will be unique to you. Be sure to cite your sources of course, this will make it harder for copycats to source your work.
Producing unique content will also do you good in the long run; enthusiasts will really take the time to read many blogs about what they are interested in. Imagine them reading your blog then getting a sense of déjà vu because you only copied some else’s article point-by-point, only using different words? They will definitely leave your site with a lower opinion of you.
Update Your Content Often
Aside from unique content, search engines are also programmed to favor the latest results, so keeping your blog updated regularly will not only keep your readers happy, it will also make your site highly visible for searches.
Know Where to Best Put Your Links
What target audience do you want to reach and what are their interests? Now where can you find them? By this we don’t mean their physical location, but where they are in the Internet. Links are still the backbone of SEO and posting the links in the right places can get the right people looking at your site.
You can also put links in blogs of friends and associates with similarly-themed blogs, that way you can create a network of mutually linking writers. The benefits are obvious, their readers can become your readers and your readers can become theirs.
